The thesis work is related to the integration of III-V materials into silicon-based photonic integrated circuits (PIC) to achieve hybrid lasers operating in the middle infrared (MIR), and this, in the context of ultimate-integration of chemical sensors for emerging applications (health and environment). The objective of this thesis is to achieve a heterogeneous and functional integration of hybrid MIR lasers on silicon-based waveguides: this hybrid approach of the source will enable to design innovative architectures in this wavelength range. A second aspect of the thesis work concerns the management of laser beams, and more precisely, the definition of the elementary optical functions of the PICs such as routing and coupling to an optical fiber. The PhD candidate will actively participate in the design (models, optical, optoelectronic and thermal simulations) and definition of new laser and PIC architectures. This work will be complemented by device fabrication as well as experimental measurements. He/she will be welcomed in the optical sensor laboratory of the CEA-LETI, and will benefit from a material and human environment at the forefront of the field.
