We have lived through a first quantum revolution during the XXth century thanks to the invention of currently widespread components such as transistors and lasers, both based on the quantification of energy levels. Today, a second quantum revolution is underway in the field of communications, computation and sensing thanks to the exploitation of quantum superposition and quantum entanglement phenomena. Single photons are an ideal physical mean to form quantum bits of information for applications to unhackable communications thanks to the laws of quantum physics and to quantum computing with unprecedented computing power. For the future large-scale deployment of these quantum applications, integrated technologies are key. Building on our mature silicon photonics platform at CEA-LETI, we are developing integrated components for the generation, manipulation and detection of single photons, matching the specifications of quantum applications. Currently, single photon sources on silicon are not deterministic, meaning that the probability to effectively emit a single photon at each pulse is less than 10%. As a consequence, this strongly limits the efficiency of photonic integrated circuits designed for the manipulation of single photons generated by several sources at different times. The aim of this PhD project is to develop a temporary memory integrated with a source of single photons on silicon, in order to store the emitting photons and to release them on-demand. Such a deterministic single photon source would have a major impact in the field of quantum communications and quantum computing. This project will be carried out in collaboration with Unviersity Pavia in Italy.
