HDR (i.e. accreditation to supervize PhD research)

In France, the accreditation to supervize PhD research (called HDR in French) is a national diploma for higher education that is is possible to obtain after a PhD. It was created in 1984 according to the Savary law. This diploma allows to be a supervisor of the Thesis, to apply to a University professor position, and to act as a rapporteur for Thesis defences.
In order to sit for the HDR examination, it is not necessary to hold a PhD degree, even if this is the most common case. During the year of the HdR examination, the reseacher has to be registrated at the university, and therefore, is recognized as a student.

“The accreditation to supervize PhD research validates the recognition of the high scientific level of the canddiate, the originality of his approach in a field of science, its ability to propose a research strategy in a broad scientific or technologic domain, and its ability to mentor young researchers.”

The ownership of the accreditation to supervize PhD research (called HDR in French) is a generally necessary condition inorder to be the supervisor of a PhD student, whereas basic daily supervision of a PhD student can be done by a PhD researcher.
