ElectroHydroDynamic flow control for the detection of toxins

Toxins are macromolecules produced by living organisms whose toxicity is very high. Toxins produced by anaerobic bacteria of the genus Clostridium or ricin produced by castor oil are for instance powerful poisons. Their rapid detection at very low concentrations presents both a health issue and a safety issue. However these agents are characterized by a very small size which makes their concentration difficult before their detection. Recent studies have shown a retention effect produced by electrohydrodynamic flows in a microfluidic channel. The proposed subject is the study of these flows in order to increase the sensitivity of the detection tests usually used. The most promising flow configurations will be studied with a numerical model and its experimental validations. Original configurations will be evaluated at this stage to broaden the usual operating framework of a microfluidic component based on these flows. In the second part of the work, a new toxin detection strategy will be developed using the developed microfluidics component.
